St Pat's Annual Teddy Bear Walk 03/21/2011
Saturday is our annual St Pat's Walk (yea, I know St Patrick's Day has come and gone, but that happens when we are competing for dates with about 25 other volkssports clubs!) The start is at the McMenamins Pub at Cedar Crossing, 2927 SW Cedar Hills Blvd, Beaverton, OR. We have a 10K route and a shorter 7K route available, both are rated 1. Start times are from 8AM to 1PM, with the finish set at 4PM. You may show up anytime during the start window as this walk, like all volkswalks, is a non-competitive self-paced walk. There are two special opportunities at this walk. First, bring a teddy bear to donate to the Washington County Sheriff's Buddy Bear program which gives our police officers the ability to give a frightened child something cuddly to hold onto. While we will take all kinds of stuff animals, they prefer teddy bears about 18" that are new or very gently used. What they can't use gets donated to the children's hospitals and other similar organizations. Second, we have our traditional Irish contest to participate in along the route. All participants completing the contest will get a special prize from the pot'o'gold at the finish. The walk goes along the edges of downtown Beaverton, through residential areas, and Shiffler Park, to the checkpoint at the McMenamins on Allen Blvd, then through the Beaverton Wetlands before returning to the finish point! Even though it's a bit past St Patrick's Day, wearing of green is encouraged. Hope t see you there! Add Comment Meeting Tonight! 02/15/2011
We are having our February meeting tonight...Tuesday, Feb 15th. We didn't want to interfere with Valentine's Day so moved the meeting a day later. The meeting will be used to plan all walks for 2011 and talk about the forthcoming changes to AVA which are significant. Come share a pizza with us at Round Table Pizza on 185th, the Hillsboro side just south of Evergreen Ave in the shopping area that includes Fedex Kinkos, Safeway, Subway and such. Start time is 6:30pm. Flooding Alert! 01/16/2011
For anyone walking the Orenco Station Historic Church walk from the New Seasons store in Hillsboro....Noble Woods Park trails are flooded and impassable (at least today). Given that the rain is letting up for a few days, water levels should go down soon. Noble Woods Park is in the Hillsboro Parks and Recreation District. You may be able to check for current conditions with them. Bypassing the park will leave the route about 1K short. We're on Facebook! 11/27/2010
Check out the new Facebook page for Cedar Milers Volkssports Club. Got some pictures of great walks? Go ahead and post 2-5 pictures that show the world what volkssporting is about! Oh yeah, we're still looking for input on next year's schedule: get-togethers, walks, fun stuff, and what not! Please let us know what you are thinking!!!!! 2011 Planning 09/26/2010
Discussions are underway and we are taking requests. We will do our traditional St. Pat's walk, possibly a mutli-event walk in Vernonia and along the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail, a walk with Weight Watchers (when and here to be determined), and Monday evening walks from mid-May to mid-Aug. Some of the Monday evening walks will be sanctioned group walks probably starting at an area pub. Where else would you like to walk? Are you willing to take the lead role of an event (don't worry, you don't have to do it all--there is help available from seasoned folks). What kind of social functions do you want to have? Should we have meetings at the library or along a walk together or at a dine out night at a local restaurant? What would it take to get you to become an active club member? What would it take to get you to take the lead on an event? If you notice a bit of frustration here....yes, this is one president who is not interested in being the queen and ruler of all things....this is a president who wants everyone to feel empowered as a member and willing to take a lead role or step up an volunteer without being begged. Tell us whjat you can and are willing to do for this club!!!!! The Last 2010 Monday Night Walk 08/25/2010
We had 11 walkers this past Monday and the walk included a look inside at the Historic Church (benefit of having the club president also serving as the church's board of trustees president). As it has been all summer long, a perfect way to end a Monday, pleasant and/or shady weather! We'll close our 2010 summer night walks on Monday, Aug 30th with the Parks of Murrayhill YRE #652. So this is your last chance to join this walking group. Start time is promptly at 6:30 as it is starting to get dark by 8:30 and our finish time. In fact, flashlights or reflective clothing might be a good idea! The address is Tualatin Fire & Rescue #66, 13900 SW Brockman Rd, Beaverton. We'll celebrate the end of what turned out to be a great idea with a special surprise upon our return. Now taking ideas for the 2011 Summer Strolls!!!! Monday Night Walks Continue 08/22/2010
Last week 3 hearty souls braved the heat and walked the Summerlake Park Walk. We were pleasantly surprised that we were in the shade most of time and there was a cool breeze blowing toward the end so it really wasn't all that hot. Tomorrow, Monday, Aug 23rd we are walking our Orenco Station Historic Church walk. As always departure time is 6:30pm. All interested walkers should meet at the sign in box in the hallway near the meat counter at the New Seasons Market on 61st Ave in Hillsboro. This is our next to last Monday night walk so don't miss out on the chance to walk with friends. Also be sure to check out our Facebook page! Going Strong on Monday Nights 08/03/2010
We had a great turnout for the walk from the Forestry Center last night; about 20 walkers showed up! The walk was awesome though we did do a bit of creative direction following (meaning getting lost and adapting as needed, such as how to get back to the trail being unable to go through the Japanese Garden entry point). I think it's safe to say this is a recommended route...just pay real close attention to the directions and allow for a bit of instinct and you'll be back to the finish without major trouble. The woods, the views, and all the point of interest along the way were worth every step! Thanks to CRVC for having this route available and for allowing us to "borrow" the walk materials from the box since the Forestry Center closed before our start time. Another Great Monday Walk 07/29/2010
We had about 15 walkers join us for our walk of the Waterhouse Boardwalk route. About half the group did the 5K while the other half did the full 10K. Despite the warm weather, we were in the shade during the early and hottest part of the evening so it was not too bad out there. Cedar Miler members were joined by folks from the Sherwood Merrywalkers, and Rose City Roamers, and even a new person trying out volkswalking for the first time! We recommend this walk to everyone as it is an easy stroll through residential areas, a forested boardwalk area, then along quiet neighborhood streets, and parts of the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation grounds. Monday Nite 07/20/2010
A pleasant walk was enjoyed by 4 Cedar Milers and 5 others; some who are becoming regulars for this Monday evening walk. We kept an easy pace throughout while enjoying the sights along the bluff and around the St Johns area. Next week we'll stay at home and enjoy our own Waterhouse Boardwalk. Hope to see lots of walkers! | CategoriesJanuary Meeting: Tuesday, Jan 10th, 6:30pm, Round Table Pizza at 2473 NW 185th, Hillsboro, OR (just past corner of 185th and Evergreen near Pier 1 Imports)...that's an all you can eat pizza/salad bar night at $6.99 per person.
Notice! PLease be advised that we do NOT allow solicitation during our walk events. Our members information is NOT available to any solicitor for any reason and may NOT be used for anything other than Cedar Miler business. Thank you! ArchivesNovember 2011 |
